Piedmont Marks Blue and Green Spirit Week amid Donate Life Month

Atlanta, Ga. (April 9, 2025) – Piedmont employees systemwide are participating this week in Blue and Green Spirit Week to show support for and raise awareness of the need for organ, eye and tissue donors. In partnership with LifeLink® of Georgia, the organization behind the designation of April as Donate Life Month, Piedmont will host events at most of its hospitals through Friday, April 11. Spirit Week events include:

  • Food trucks on site, with a portion of proceeds going to Donate Life Georgia
  • Raising the Donate Life flag in front of hospitals
  • Staff wearing blue and green shirts
  • Distribution of appreciation baskets to nursing units that support transplantation
  • Decorating bird houses and creating other art projects in line with the “Let Life Sing” theme

Piedmont Atlanta Hospital is home to the LifeLink Organ Recovery Center, a dedicated space for organ donors and their families to receive state-of-the-art care. Blue and Green Spirit Week will conclude with three nurses from the ORC receiving the game ball from Piedmont partner the University of Georgia (UGA) at their G-Day scrimmage this Saturday, April 12.

Nearly 3,000 people are currently in need of an organ transplant in Georgia, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network. Piedmont’s observation of Donate Life Month, including Blue and Green Spirit Week, is an extension of its commitment as a major transplant center to organ donors and their families, organ transplant recipients and all patients waiting for a match.

Piedmont Transplant Institute is a state and nationwide destination for quality care. In fact, it is one of the country's top 10 largest transplant programs. In 2024, surgeons performed the 2,000th liver transplant and 5000th kidney transplant at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. In addition, the rapidly growing heart transplant program at Piedmont Atlanta achieved more than 100 heart transplants in 2024 alone. With this milestone, Piedmont ranked nationally among the top five heart transplant programs.

For patients who need both a heart and kidney transplant at the same time, Piedmont reintroduced the option of a dual transplant back in July 2023, and 19 patients have benefited so far.
